Delays, Closings, & Emergency Info
In the event of a weather related or other emergency, the Windham Public Schools’ officials do their best to make timely decisions regarding closings, delayed openings, or early dismissals.
Once decisions are made, it is our goal to clearly communicate any changes in schedules to parents and staff, as soon as possible. The School District Superintendent confers with the Public Works’ officers from the Town of Windham before making the final decision. Decisions about closings and delayed openings are made no later than 5:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Decisions on early dismissals are ideally made no later than 11:00 a.m. on the day of the event. If schools are closed for the entire day or if they close early, generally, sports or practices and games are cancelled or postponed in these instances. Telephone calls will be made to Windham High School and Windham Middle School families by 5:30 a.m. and to elementary school and Barrows’ families no later than 6:30 a.m. on days that school is cancelled.
Closing and late opening announcements are carried on radio stations: WILI (AM/FM); WTIC (AM); WICH/ WCTY; and Bomba 97.1 FM. Announcements are carried, as well, on the following television channels: WFSB-TV; WVIT-TV NBC Connecticut; WTHN-TV News 8; Fox CT TV; and Channel 192 (in the Charter Communications Cable area).
Windham Public Schools’ announcements affect all Windham Public Schools and Preschools. Windham Technical High School and St. Mary-St. Joseph School usually follow the Windham Public Schools’ decision, but at times, they will make a separate decision.
In addition, due to inclement weather or an unanticipated problem, Windham Public Schools’ officials sometimes find it necessary to close schools early in the school day.
Early School Closings will result in the following:
There will be no afternoon preschool sessions;
Radio and TV announcements will be made by the above stations concerning the
time of early closings; andLunches will be provided according to the lunch menu, but will be served earlier.
You are urged to notify your child’s school of an alternate place for your child to go if you are at work or away from home when we have an early closing. Please complete this in a timely fashion so that student safety is maximized.
